Editing Information

We offer editing and this page is to go into more detail the editing services we offer. It will also explain what each stage of editing entails.

Developmental Editing - This type of editing looks at the overall structure and content of your work. It can begin even before work has started on the manuscript. The main themes looked at are plot, pacing, characterisation and the setting. Some stories require only very minor adjustments, while others will need more severe overhauling. Character and plot changes may be required. Settings may change. This is basically to enable the structure of the story to be as tight and as focused as possible.

Line Editing - This type of editing looks into the content on a paragraph level. Language and tone are looked at. Some of the things looked at are repetition, run-on sentences, overuse of phrases or cliches, correct use of tenses, tightening of the narrative to improve coherence, tightening of dialogue, best use of descriptive language and dialogue (showing, not telling) and looking at pacing. This type of edit tightens up the manuscript into a more complete manuscript. As with all types of editing less edits tend to be required with the more writing experience the author has.

Copy Editing - This is basically a very advanced proofread. It looks at spelling, punctuation, grammar and sentence formation. Consistency in spelling, fonts, capital letters and numbers. it flags up anything factually incorrect, plus flow and plot/character consistency. A copy edit fixes technical flaws and polishes your manuscript ready for publication.

Proofread - This is the final stage of editing. The last polish as it were. It looks for errors in formatting, any spelling, punctuation or grammar errors that may have have missed the previous editing rounds. We always advise that, even if employing a proofreader, the author should also proof their own work before publishing. An excellent way is to read aloud. It's surprising how many minor errors become obvious when reading aloud.

Also, here at Bookaholic PR, we offer what we like to call a Comprehensive Edit. This is basically an amalgamation of a line & copy edit, where both are covered simultaneously. This can be useful if the author has time, or money constraints.

We are happy to supply a free sample edit. This would normally be a chapter or about 5000 words.

While not all manuscripts will require all these rounds of editing, some may. We feel it is best to offer a full editing service but to also explain exactly what each stage of editing entails.
